5 Forgotten About Ways To Support Your Money This Lockdown

It’s a new year and a new lockdown.

You may be feeling worried, apathetic, angry or a mixture of many emotions.

Many people are understandably concerned about their money. That is why we are running our COVID Cash Recovery course, a free 2-hour webinar which train and provides you with all the information and techniques to help others in your community with money worries this lockdown.

Here are five (often forgotten about) ways that you could put pounds back into your pocket this lockdown, which we have taken from our COVID Cash Recovery course:

1)      Pension Credit – over 1.2 million individuals in the UK are eligible for this benefit but do not claim it. Pension Credit is a benefit for those of state pension age which gives you a minimum of £170 for individuals and £230 for those in a couple. It also provides access to a whole host of other schemes such as a Council Tax exemption, free NHS dental treatment, reduced glasses costs, money for travel to hospital expenses, renters can get their rent paid in full and home owners can get help with their mortgage interest and service charges.

2)      Switching Energy Supplier - one of the most powerful ways to save money is switching your energy supplier. If you’re in financial difficulty right now, your local energy partnership can help you do this. Most people, regardless of their income, are overpaying and switching provider can save you between £100 - £400 a year – with an average person saving £13 a month.

3)      Discretionary Housing Payment – this may sound complicated, but all this means is extra money to help you with housing costs if you are on need. If you are entitled to Housing Benefit or the Housing Costs element of Universal Credit you would be eligible for a DHP.

4)      Low-Income Water Tariff – all water suppliers in the UK have what is referred to as a ‘low-income water tariff’. This is a reduction in how much your water bill would be each month (or however you pay it) and is typically given to those who have a reduction in income or on benefits. Their specific eligibility will vary from location to location, but you typically have to ask your water supplier to be placed on this scheme.

5)      Charitable Grants – you might be thinking ‘I’m never going to be eligible for a charitable grant’ – you would be surprised. At the click of a button, using the Turn2Us Grant Search engine, you can see all the possible charitable grants you could be eligible for! No catches whatsoever!
