What can we use our money for?

Ever wonder how the values we have affect the choices we make on a day to day basis?

What are the things we feel are ‘important’? So important, in fact, that they begin to govern the decisions we make, especially decisions around spending priorities.

At Lifesavers, our four core values when thinking about finances are: generosity, wisdom, thankfulness and justice. How often do we consider these values when we make financial decisions?

Considering our values, especially in the choices we make over-spending, can give us a fantastic opportunity to explore the differences between the things we need and the things we want. These will clearly vary from person to person according to circumstances and, especially with children, provide a fantastic context to some simple money calculations and problems.

As teachers, we quite often give children the option of choice within our Maths problems, which things to buy from the shop etc. Have we ever given them other things to consider in that bit of role play, perhaps considering how much they will spend, what will they buy and how much they will save?

Thought for the day: Is it possible for spending to become excessive? What about at special celebration times like birthdays and Christmas?
