Milo and our LifeSavers Values – Wisdom

Milo and our LifeSavers Values – Wisdom
Spending money can be so very tempting sometimes. I’m sure most of us have been in that situation, where we have some money to spend and the temptation to buy something straight away and use it all up is so strong.

Milo was certainly feeling that way after he spoke to his brother who advised him to spend all his money on something exciting straight away. Perhaps it’s a good job that the next person he spoke to was his Aunty who had some wise words to say to him about the consequences of spending all of his money at once. She reminded him how important it is to save our money for when we really need it. She pointed out to Milo that he had an exciting visit planned with school and how he would feel sad if he didn’t have money which he could spend to make his visit memorable. She talked to him about how he could save his money in a bank account.

Do you save money? Do you have a bank account of your own?

How many times have we been in a situation like that, where the temptation to spend what we have is so strong. We might really want that exciting toy, or that perfect item of clothing. It’s even easier to spend our money without thinking if all it takes is a click on a website too.

A wise person once said that if you have the urge to buy something, especially online, then write that item down on a piece of paper, stick it onto your notes board or fridge and wait for a week. If the urge to buy it is still there after a week, then think about it more.

What do you think about this suggestion? Have you tried it?

It does make sense to have that pause in our thinking sometimes before we rush headlong into the store or our online basket and consider what else might be on the horizon.

Perhaps it may be time to have another think about how often we save our money, and the ways we have to help us do that.

Thoughts for the week:

What do banks/building societies/credit unions do to help us save? Is there a savings club in your school?

How could you make saving a habit? – have you heard of the penny a day challenge? Every day you save a penny more than the day before…

  • Stats

  • A penny a day for a year = £3.65

  • One penny more every day = £667.95 per year

Think about what you could save, and what you could be saving for. You could set yourself some targets, small and achievable. It really will feel fantastic when you see your savings growing. It’ll feel great too when you are able to use some of your savings for something which you really need, or an experience which you will never forget.
