Tips for keeping theconversation positive
How we talk about money matters too. A few simple things can help children feel comfortable sharing what they really think.
Stay curious
Try not to jump in with the “right” answer. Ask what they think and what makes them think that.
Make space for different views
Children see the world in different ways. Explore their ideas, even if they’re different from your own.
Keep it judgement-free
Create a safe space so they feel comfortable sharing what they think and how they feel.
Be open about not knowing
You won’t have every answer, and that’s OK. Looking something up or working it out together can be part of the conversation.
What children say about money
“When I can’t afford something I want, I feel alright because it’s a want not a need.”
“It might even go to NHS foundation. So taxes can really help other people.”
“When I have money I feel happy but I’d rather somebody else use it for a better reason.”
“I like to save my money for when I’m older.”
Helping children find their way with money
At Just Finance Foundation, we want every child to have the opportunity to build their knowledge, skills and confidence with money from an early age.
We help the adults around children make financial education practical, engaging and relevant to their lives.
We don’t tell children what to do with money. We help them explore how it works, how it feels and what matters to them.
So that as their world gets bigger, they’re better equipped to make the money choices that are right for them.
